Keeping up with technology

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

I admit it, I’ve been somewhat away from programming lately. First, due to nature of my position at my previous employer and current employer, I had to learn how to manage projects and people. Second, I got hitched last year and also had to move not once, but twice within one year! Third, a lot of stuff has happened on family, professional, and school sides that it was really hairy. Needless to say, actual programming has taken a significant last position in my priorities

To cope with this, I had to resort to reading developers’ blogs and technical documentation provided by companies and OSS groups to get an idea of what new frameworks and technologies were all about. Yet, I’ve missed out on Silverlight, the cross-browser, cross-platform RIA application framework released by Microsoft! This is a very serious stab at Adobe, obviously. It will be very interesting to see how Adobe will respond. My bet is that we’ll see something from Adobe as soon as in Q4 of this year.

There are other flourishing technologies such as RubyOnRails, Flex, OpenLaszlo, etc. Be sure to check out OpenLaszlo - very interesting OSS concept.

On that note - I must admit I miss the startup environment, and the adrenaline rush that comes with working for one…

Managing growth

Starting a company is challenging enough. Keeping it on growth curve and keeping up with growth is even more difficult. You’ve got to find office, you’ve got to streamline accounting processes, other business processes, and so on. Never mind making sure that all e-mails are answered, all invoices are sent, all orders are fulfilled. Boy, 2007 is already proving to be an exciting year, despite my significant setbacks on my other two fronts!
